The jolly and happy Cherry Rondina fans have come to love was nowhere to be found after Foton got whipped in their PSL All-Filipino Conference debut by defending champion Petron.
Out of rhythm and unhappy, the incoming UST junior only had 7 points and was taken out in the third set when things continued to go south for the Tornadoes.
“(I’m) upset po kasi ang panget ng performance ko and nadamay ko yung team. Na-frustrate po ako pagkatapos po kasi talo kami,” she told FOX Sports after the 19-25, 17-25, 21-25 defeat at the FilOil Flying V Centre in San Juan.
Riding on a big game from Aiza Maizo, the Tri-Activ Spikers dominated Foton in all scoring skills, with coach Vilet Ponce-de Leon haplessly trying to push all buttons to find the right combination.
Rondina, who was tipped to be one of the bright spots for the Tornadoes in the tournament, played out of control.
“Gigil po talaga ako,” she admitted. “Dun nawala diskarte ko and sa sobrang hyper ko, nawala sa isip ko ang mag-isip.”
Leaving the dugout a bit teary-eyed, the Cebu native added she is thankful her teammates stayed with her even after the sordid performance.
“Over all po that was a good experience and may nakuha akong learnings. Sobrang thankful ako kahit panget laro andun parin yung team para i-cheer up ang lahat ng teammates namin po. Basta sobrang happy ko (na) po ngayon,” she said.
Even with a dismal PSL debut, the 5-foot-5 outside hitter still found a silver lining in their straight-set loss.
“Sabi ni coach (Vilet) may time pa para bumawi. She told me na bawi ka kasi hindi ikaw yun and she always advices me naman and guides me everytime nasa loob ako ng court and labas,” she said.
“Basta gagawin ko ang lahat para makatulong sa team and mas magbibigay pa ng saya sa team.” — By Joyce Palad
