Promising Ateneo spiker Ana Gopico weaves magic with brush and makeup

Ana Gopico has a hidden talent.

Yes, her full potential in playing volleyball is yet to be seen by the sport’s fans due to her unfortunate knee injuries but this story does not revolve around the physicality of the game.

In fact, in total contrast to the rough and tough nature of her chosen sport, Gopico, a student-athlete who is raring to make a return for Ateneo in Season 79, happens to be good with hair and makeup.

One glorious Wednesday morning at a photoshoot that features top volleyball stars Kim Fajardo and Alyssa Valdez, Gopico walked into the set carrying her makeup organizer looking every bit a professional as if she’s been doing it for a long time.

As it turns out, she has.

“Fourth year high school nun tapos grad ball. Parang gusto ko i-try na ako lang ang gagawa. Ako lang nag-ayos sa sarili ko pero medyo chaka pa kasi starter pa lang.” she told FOX Sports, talking about how her obsession with hair and makeup started.

“Tapos nung college naman, like si Ate Ly (Valdez) pag may event siya at walang sariling make-up, maga-ask siya sinong marunong mag make-up, ako na lang,” she added. “Or pag may event ‘yung team pag may party, ako parang, ‘Guys, isa lang ako. Madami kayo.'”

While fans see their idols at their least glamorous moments whenever they are inside the court covered in sweat, all of them are, first and foremost, women who every once in a while would switch their jerseys and rubber shoes for a night in dresses and high heels.

But unlike volleyball where a mentor’s capacity is crucial to one’s success, Gopico reveals she is self-taught when it comes to her passion for beauty.

“Natuto ako how to be better kaka-Youtube. Tapos practice din sa sarili. As in pag 10pm na tapos bored ako, manonood ako ng video. Ita-try ko na siya sa sarili ko,” she quipped.

“My favorite look, gusto ko ‘yung natural lang para feel mo na ang ganda mo at blooming ka,” she added while exchanging banter with Valdez in between takes.

Asked what beauty product will she choose if she can only bring and use one, Gopico like the true ‘it’ girl that she is, said she must have at least two: an eyeliner and a lipstick.

Here’s why: “Eyeliner tsaka lipstick kasi eyeliner pwede sa eyes and kilay and pwede na din pang contour. Then lipstick kasi pwede na din siya sa cheeks. O diba? Multi-purpose siya.”

Now fully recovered from her torn ACL, Gopico has officially made rejoined the Lady Eagles in the recently concluded ASEAN University Games where they finished third.

With a volleyball career and a degree in Diplomacy and International Relations on the horizon, the spiker, who idolizes makeup artist Robbie Pinera, says she is open to doing more hair and makeup work on the side.

“Pwede ko din naman siyang i-pursue professionally. Depende pa. Ang goals ko kasi talaga is ‘yung ambassador,” she said.

Talking about what she gets out of going the extra length to accentuate other people’s beauty, she closed by saying: “Pinaka-satisfaction na nakukuha ko pag feel nung taong mine-make-up-an ko na sasabihin na ‘Sobrang gumanda ako.’ ‘Yun pa lang reward na for me.” — By Mac Dionisio
