TIP sent shockwaves throughout the Shakey’s V-League after stunning Ateneo Monday night at the Philsports Arena.
And while it was the talk of the night on social media, coach Boy Paril doesn’t want to overstate their victory.
“Actually, di ako ganun kasaya kasi alam naman natin yung team ng Ateneo ngayon lahat yan bata pa e,” he said. “Masaya ako nanalo pero yung talagang capability ng team namin di talaga nasukat.”
“Masaya naman kami sa panalo namin and nagpapasalamat din ako dun sa dalawang naming guest players si Chie Saet at Mylene Paat. Kailangan kasi namin yung dalawang guest player na yon kasi marami kaming nawalang players 6 players ang nawala namin from the core of the team due to graduation,” he added.
Paat tallied a team-high 14 points and was the only player in double digits for TIP, whose second leading scorer was Eunice Mabayao with 9.
Four Lady Eagles, on the other hand, broke twin digits led by Ponggay Gaston’s game-high 17 markers.
However, Ateneo’s 52 unforced errors did them in, as they succumbed in 5 sets in their first V-League outing without graduated stars Alyssa Valdez, Amy Ahomiro and Mae Tajima.
Paril said he egged on his wards to shine in the fifth frame, where the Lady Engineers shut the doors on the Lady Eagles with a 5-1 run to clinch the win.
“Binigyan ko ng emphasis nung fifth set yung offense namin at floor defense kasi nung natalo kami ng second and fourth set dun kami masyadong maraming errors e yung mga walang kwentang errors,” he said.
Next on TIP’s calendar is Jaja Santiago and NU, and Paril said the most important thing for his team is to learn from the powerhouse squads they’re facing in the competition.
“Wala naman akong masyadong expectation sa tournament na to para sa team namin. Ang goal lang namin, nanalo kami ngayon, siguro sa susunod ang goal namin is manalo uli,” he said. “Ang team namin as of now yung preparation namin nasa basic e kasi nga maraming gumradate. Titingnan na lang namin kung ano yung pwede namin against NU.” — By John Chester Fajardo
