Palaro crown up next after NU nets second straight UAAP jrs volley title

NU Bullpups went on to win their second straight UAAP Juniors Volleyball Championship as they defeated the UST Tiger Cubs in straight sets, 25-15, 25-18, 25-19, Wednesday at the Adamson Gym.

Compared to their first two Finals games, the Bullpups didn’t waste any time and dominated the Tiger Cubs all throughout the game.

Season MVP Lorence Cruz and Billy Jean Amina spearheaded the Bullpups’ offense, attacking from all angles which made it hard for UST to defend. Although ending the game with an injured hand, Amina was crowned as the Finals MVP for Season 79.

Showing true Championship form, NU coach Edgar Barroga admitted that it wasn’t their skills that was lacking in their game 2 loss.

“Actually ang ginawa naming training yesterday and Monday was mental. Kasi yun ang nangyari sa amin. We are physically conditioned pero yung mental nila, yung attitude nila, medyo nagbabago. Kaya yun ang ginawa namin ng two days, more on mental,” he said.

Barroga also described it as a “sweet Championship” as the team knew that it will be a tough climb to the top. But nonetheless, the Bullpups didn’t give up and went on for a back-to-back championship.

“Sobrang saya. Unang-una kitang kita sa mga bata yung pagbabago. Kasi yung mga batang yan may mga issues since high school di ba may mga problema. Maraming nabago sa kanila in good naman para sa future nila,” he added.

Now that the UAAP has ended, Barroga said that they still have one more business to attend to.

“Siyempre celebration, tapos pahinga. Pero paghahandaan din namin yung Palaro (Manila Meet) kasi nag Champion kami nun.”

He also added that winning tournaments like these made it easier for his recruitment as some players from different schools are willingly trying out for his team.

“Kasi napapansin ko pag nagcha-champion kami, nagpupuntahan sa amin yung mga bata. Hindi mo na sila kailangan i-recruit. Sila na mismo naga-apply.”

Asked if his team is now ready to battle Palaro, he said, “ readyng ready na.” – By Joyce Palad
