Already on top the standings after punctuating the first round of the eliminations with a 4-set win over defending champion La Salle, Ateneo assistant coach Sherwin Meneses is convinced the Lady Eagles will soar higher as the UAAP Season 79 progresses.
Currently the hottest team in the league, Ateneo chalked up its fifth straight win with its triumph over long-time college nemesis La Salle on Saturday to improve to a tournament-best 6-1 record, heading into the second round.
“Aangat pa yung team,” Ateneo assistant coach Sherwin Meneses said after the win against La Salle, in the first meeting between these two teams since last year’s UAAP Season 78 Finals. “Sana mag-continue hanggang second round, hanggang semis.”
The Lady Eagles displayed composure and a lot of grit when they survived two tension-filled sets en route to establishing a 2-0 set advantage.
“Yung first two sets hindi lang bumitaw yung mga players. Talagang gusto nilang manalo,” he said.
Asked what he thinks should the Lady Eagles continue to work on come the crucial final 7 games of the eliminations, Meneses cited the importance of mastering the fundamentals.
“Service-receive, kasi basic talaga yun. ‘Yun ang nauuna sa volleyball. Pagpapractisan pa namin service-receive namin.,” he stressed.
