Tots Carlos says UP needs to be mentally tough as Final 4 nears

After stopping its bleeding by beating University of the East recently, University of the Philippines finally got its playoff bid on track in the UAAP Season 79 women’s volleyball tournament.

Middle blocker Kathy Bersola admitted the team, which went off to a surprise 4-0 start, played shakily when it went on a 4-game slide from there.

“Siyempre medyo na-down and naguluhan din kami sa sarili namin. Parang kaniya-kaniyang realizations. Pero ayun, move on lang,” Bersola said, whose team gutted out a 25-14, 18-25, 25.-15, 25-10 win over hardback UE on Wednesday.

For Tots Carlos, that 4-set victory over UE came more as a relief since the team finally regained its winning ways again heading to the critical stretch of the second round.

“Oo naman, siyempre sobrang tulong ng win namin kasi nga apat na games namin talo.  Sana magtuloy-tuloy,” said Carlos, who scored 21 points (15 attacks, 2 blocks and 4 aces).

But for the Lady Maroons to get a playoff spot, they will have to take care of their last 5 games, especially since majority of the teams are already jockeying for Final 4 positions.

And for Carlos, everything boils down to mental toughness.

“Sa mental side, siguro more confidence,” she said.

Though that’s easier said than done since UP will be facing defending champion La Salle, which will be eyeing a payback after dropping a 25-22, 25-21, 25-19 loss to the Katipunan-based squad last February 15.
