Already assured of a semifinals berth, PayMaya survived a gritty challenge from a young Balipure-NU squad in five sets today to get hold of the second spot in the Premier Volleyball League Reinforced Conference.
With the victory, the High Flyers ended the preliminaries with a 5-2 record and will need to wait for two more teams to advance to the semifinal rounds. Also waiting with them is first-seeded Creamline Cool Smashers.
After the game, PayMaya head coach Roger Gorayeb lamented on the seemingly long break from competitive volleyball for his squad.
Since they are waiting for two more teams to complete the Final Four cast, this also means that they have to wait for about three weeks before playing competitive volleyball in the PVL.
The multi-titled collegiate coach said: “Hindi naman ‘yan ‘yung napag-usapan nung meeting namin dati.”
Three weeks of waiting, for Gorayeb, is already too long and could be an advantage or disadvantage.
“Sobrang tagal siyempre sobrang haba ng paghihintay mo. Hindi mo alam kung magiging advantage o disadvantage ‘yung paghihintay at matagal na pagpapahinga,” he said.
“Ang nakikita ko lang na advantage ay nandoon ka sa Top 4 kaagad. Other than that, wala na,” Gorayeb added.
He, however, said that he has no other choice but to comply and just think of ways so as to avoid rust during the long break.
“So kailangan kong mag-isip ng mga gagawin namin para hindi kami mabore,” he said.
Pressed at the specifics of what he will do, the very animated coach said in jest: “Tatlong linggo? Punta kaming Europe.”
He even jokingly asked the reporters: “Sama kayo Europe, gusto niyo?”
Antics aside, Gorayeb said he is already talking with other teams for possible tune-up games over the long break.
“May mga kinakausap na ako para sa tune-up para tuloy ang laro namin,” Gorayeb shared.
Taking a trip down memory lane, Gorayeb said he has been a victim of these kinds of scenarios in the past, most of which not favoring his team.
“Nadala na ako, ilang beses na akong nabiktima ng ganyan. Maghihintay ng ganyan,” he said. “Naghihintay ako nang matagal. Last year ata nabiktima ako ng ganyan.”
But putting his hopes on his players, Gorayeb somehow sees a silver lining on this dilemma.
“Pero nandiyan na ‘yan eh so laro na lang kami. Maganda rin para sa ibang teams na kasali rito,” Goraybeb ended.
