PSL Invitational to use #AlltoPlay format

Deeper bench promises deeper chances.

Teams with deeper bench will have an edge in the 2018 Chooks-To-Go Philippine Superliga (PSL) Invitational Conference as the tournament is set to use the #AlltoPlay format when it officially opens on June 23 at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.

First used during the 2017 edition of the same conference, this year’s installment will once again implement the rule which aims to give every player of the 10 participating clubs playing time.

Out of 24 matches played last year where the Jovelyn Gonzaga-led Cignal HD Spikers emerged as champions, five of which reached five sets, 11 are four-setters, and only eight ended in straight sets.

This year’s conference is billed to be even more action-packed with the re-installation of the format.

The format requires teams to field their official starters in the first set, but come second set, only one from the previous starting lineup will remain and five players and the second libero who didn’t start must be deployed.

The remaining three sets, though, will be back to regular format and the teams may field any player combination.

Player substitutions also have restrictions during the first two sets.

Unless a player inside the court gets injured, a team can only send substitution after the second technical timeout.

Second stringers, who most often than not see scarce court time, will benefit the most in the said format.

Action starts with Generika Ayala Lifesavers locking horns with debuting United Auctioneers in the 4 p.m. clash while title favorites Foton Tornadoes and F2 Logistics go for the jugular at 6 p.m.
