Laure and Francisco duo leads UST to fourth-straight victory

by Denver del Rosario

Veteran Christine Francisco and rookie Eya Laure combined for 34 points to propel University of Santo Tomas (UST) to fourth-straight victory at the expense of the University of the Philippines (UP) in the PVL Collegiate Conference earlier at the Filoil Flying V Arena in San Juan.

Laure topscored UST’s side with 18 points off 12 attacks, five aces, and an ace while Francisco chipped in 16 built from 15 attacks and a block in four sets of intense battle against UP, 22-25, 25-20, 25-18, 26-24.

After a strong start in the first set, the Tigresses collapsed midway as the Lady Maroons came from behind and snatched the set with rookie Nicole Magsarile leading the charge.

However, UST resurged from their opening set loss and made quick work of the next two sets, with the duo of Laure and Francisco showing their dominance from the attack line.

The fourth set proved neck-and-neck as both teams refused to pull away from each other, with the Tigresses coming back from a five-point deficit to tie the game 17-all.

The Lady Maroons eventually committed crucial attack errors in the latter part of the extended frame, ended by an off-the-block hit by Laure for the win.

With the victory, the Espana-based crew are still scathe-free at 4-0.

Meanwhile, open hitters Isa Molde and Magsarile led the fight for UP with 13 and 12 points, respectively, as their team goes down with a 1-1 win-loss record.
