Is there any way to stop them?
The dynamic duo of Sisi Rondina and Bernadeth Pons just added another achievement in their already hefty portfolio as they emerged champions of the Ibalong Beach Volleyball Tournament 2018 in Legazpi City.
After dismantling DM Demontano and Jackie Estoquia of Sta. Lucia, the Petron Blaze Spikers outside hitters crushed Generika Ayala’s Patty Orendain and Fiola Ceballos in the championship game, 25-10, 25-10, to win the tourney. SiPons, as they are more commonly called, were dominant throughout the short tourney, finishing their campaign unbeaten without dropping a single set.
In less than two years of playing side-by-side, the high-leaping pair has already won three championships.
Stalwarts of their respective universities, Rondina and Pons developed an undeniable chemistry in the sand en route to winning several championships since they paired up last year.
SiPons first played as a duo in 2017 during the Philippine Superliga Beach Volleyball Challenge Cup where they ousted Orendain and Ceballos for the gold medal. That same year, the pair was called to banner the flag in the 29th Southeast Asian Beach Volleyball Championship in Singapore. They went as far as qualifying in the quarterfinals of the annual tourney — opening their bid with a loss from Thailand, winning their second match against Malaysia, and falling short against Indonesia in the quarterfinals.
A year later, they paired up for Petron anew, bringing home the trophy of the 2018 installation of the PSL Cup after a quick demolition on Demontano and Estoquia in the Finals.
Fast forward to the Ibalong tourney, they did it again against both of their previous PSL tormentors. And it doesn’t come as a surprise.
Rondina surprisingly hits with so much power for a spiker who merely stands 5-foot-6. The UAAP Season 80 Best Scorer is a fearless hitter who will always find ways to evade the much-taller blockers in front of her. On the other hand, Pons is the girl for the job when in comes to defending the floor. The former go-to player of FEU Lady Tamaraws is not only smart hitter, but also an ever reliable floor defender who can give liberos run for their money.
Whilst Pons watch the floor, Rondina will keep the points flowing, and vice versa. They are Yin and Yang — a perfect match.
Another good thing: they are still young. Rondina and Pons are both only 21 years old. If they — hopefully — continue playing as a duo, it won’t be a surprise if they’d be coined the greatest beach volley duo the country has ever seen.
And it’s possible.
