Another UAAP team had a taste of a hard-earned win against the College of Saint Benilde (CSB) Lady Blazers as the UP Lady Maroons clashed with the Taft-based squad, 26-24, 27-25, 29-27, on Wednesday, at the FilOil Flying V Centre.
Backing up a little bit in this season’s PVL Collegiate Conference history, the FEU Lady Tams and Adamson Lady Falcons barely pulled off easy victories against the Lady Blazers, with the former winning on a tiring five-set match and the latter, in bloody four sets.
On Wednesday’s game, UP Head Coach Godfrey Okumu admitted the struggle on the part of the Lady Maroons to claim their second win in the conference from the tough fight given by the Lady Blazers who were able to maintain and catch up with UP’s slim leads all throughout the sets.
“We have to struggle,” Okumu said. “The team that we played against is not an easy team.”
The Kenyan head coach is also well aware of CSB’s performance in the league – on how the team gave its previous opponents a hard time to snatch quick wins.
“It’s a team that we cannot underrate. We have to give them that respect. They are a good team.”
With the ‘not well played’ win of the Lady Maroons as evaluated by Okumu, he is hopeful that the team will step up come next match against another strong team, FEU.
“I hope with the weekend coming, they’ll be ready to push themselves to the required standard,” he said.
The UP Lady Maroons will be facing fellow UAAP school, FEU Lady Tams, on August 18, at the same venue.
