Following the announcement of Larong Volleyball sa Pilipinas, Inc. (LVPI) of its plan to send a team in the 2020 Asian Women’s U-19 Volleyball Championship, fans have started an online petition for Nazareth School of National University (NSNU) mentor Regine Diego be assigned as its head coach.
In a technical meeting last Friday, LVPI bared that it has tapped the core of the Diego-backed NSNU squad to compete in the biennial tournament to be held from June 22 to 29 in Chongqing, China.
LVPI program head Peter Cayco also added that they are considering Diego to be part of the coaching staff led by coach Kung Fu Reyes and Brian Esquibel.
With this, fans rally to campaign for Diego’s assignment as the head guru of the squad by trending #ReginaForU19HeadCoach while starting an online petition.
For @jaystansports, naming Diego, who steered NSNU to its fifth UAAP championship in six years, is a logical move as the team will mostly be comprised of her wards with Mhicaela Belen, Alyssa Solomon and Evangeline Alinsug at the helm.
seriously, if we want to have a significant AVC U19 campaign anchored with the NUGVT core, @coachRegine17 should be named HEAD Coach and should be given free rein in the selection of her staff.
a CS “pool” for consideration is a “BS” option, a farce.#SavePhilippineVolleyball.

Per @forumNU, Diego’s appointment should be a no brainer as she, more than Reyes and Esquibel, knows her players and their strengths and weaknesses.
Coach Reg has contributed to the growth of the players more than the LVPI officials.🍵
And, you’re saying you plan to get her core… without her being the HC? … She obviously knows the strength of her players more than anyone. #SavePhilippineVolleyball #ReginaForU19HeadCoach https://t.co/QPo6w9d3IK

User @volleydator1 echoed this, saying that the NSNU core will only actually work if Diego’s system remains intact.
The only way an NUGVT-core team will work is if you keep them intact together with its coaches and its actual WORKING system.

As of writing time, 400 fans have signed the petition campaigning for Diego’s appointment.
Diego, who hailed from the Ramil de Jesus-mentored DLSU program, recently towed NSNU to the UAAP Season 82 championship.
She was also the head coach of the bronze medalist Philippine squad who saw action in the 2017 ASEAN School Games while leading before leading the country to silver in 2019.
Philippines last participated in the U-19 tourney in 2016 under Francis Vicente’s mentorship, placing 10th in the 15-nation field.
