Angels stun Cool Smashers in debut, newcomer Salas drops 20

PetroGazz opened its Premiere Volleyball League (PVL) Reinforced Conference 2019 campaign on a high note after sweeping the defending champions Creamline in three sets, 25-22, 26-24, 25-22, on Sunday during their debut match at the FilOil Flying V Center in San Juan.

The Angels were quick to spread their wings, banking on their hard-hitting import duo of Wilma Salas and Janisa Jonson to stun the Cool Smashers.

The newcomer Salas sent an early statement as she powered PetroGazz with 20 big points off 18 kills and two blocks.

Johnson, who is now on her second tour of duty here, capped the night with 16 hits including the game-clinching hit.

Aleoscar Blanco managed nine points for Creamline, who lost its ace spiker Alyssa Valdez during the second set of the match after the latter slipped and twisted her left ankle.

Kuttika Kaewpin added eight as no spiker from the losing team reached double-digits.

PetroGazz seemed to be the more organized team right from the get-go as Salas and Johnson proved too hot to handle for Creamline.

The Cool Smashers have had a glimpse of hope in the third as they erased a four-point deficit to breath on the neck of their opponents, 21-22.

Johnson then came through with two of the last three points of the Angels, who also won their opening day match against Creamline last conference.

PetroGazz had the advantage across all scoring departments, dominating Creamline in spikes (42-29) and aces (11-5) with a slight edge in blocks (4-1).

The Angels target win no. 2 against BanKo Perlas while the Cool Smashers hope to recover against BaliPure on Wednesday.
