Despite sweep over Air Force, Alyssa Valdez admits Cool Smashers still not at 100 percent

While the Creamline Cool Smashers started the conference on a strong note, team captain Alyssa Valdez admits her team is still adjusting to function as one system.

The Cool Smashers opened their campaign with a straight-set win over the Philippine Air Force Jet Spikers, 25-23, 25-20, 25-15, earlier in the 2019 Premier Volleyball League Open Conference at the Filoil Flying V Center.

After a tightly contested opening set, Creamline slowly found their groove and easily snatched the next two sets to take the win.

Valdez, together with Michele Gumabao and Risa Sato, finished in double digits–13, 14, and 11 points, respectively–to lead the Cool Smashers.

Despite starting the tournament with a straight-set victory, Valdez said Creamline still felt a little rusty and needed getting used to playing without their foreign reinforcements Kuttika Kaewpin and Aleoscar Blanco, who were both vital cogs in their offensive framework in the previous conference.

“As a team, nag-adjust din kami kasi kahit three weeks din ‘yung layoff namin for preparing for this conference, kasi iba pa rin ‘yung may kasama kang imports. Overall we were really adjusting and coping sa system na dinadala sa amin ni Coach Tai,” Valdez said.

Finishing as silver medalists behind the Petro Gazz Angels in the recently concluded Reinforced Conference, Valdez and the Cool Smashers are looking for vengeance this tournament as they look to get back on top.

While they admittedly started slow, the team captain said she holds complete trust in her teammates and their coaching staff to get them back to their usual dominant form.

“I really trust our coaching staff that even if we’re feeling a little heavy right now, na we’re feeling medyo not on our 100 percent pa, meron siyang program na para pagdating namin sa dulo, we’re more than a hundred percent,” Valdez said.

The Cool Smashers look to establish back-to-back wins as they face Motolite on Wednesday.
