Jovelyn Gonzaga in high spirits after back-to-back five-set wins

Volleyball truly never stops for the Bionic Ilongga.

Despite back-to-back games in two different leagues, Jovelyn Gonzaga refuses to waste her time back in the court—evident with her recent stellar showing.

After dishing out a double-double performance in the Philippine Superliga’s All-Filipino Conference, she elevates her game even higher as she recorded a triple-double feat this time in the Premier Volleyball League.

Gonzaga and the Pacifictown Army Lady Troopers emerged victorious as they survived the Choco Mucho Flying Titans in five sets, 39-41, 19-25, 25-19, 25-20, 15-12, earlier in the 2019 PVL Open Conference at the Filoil Flying V Center.

After losing hold of the extended opening frame and the set after, the Lady Troopers got their game back together and put the pace in their favor to take the next three sets for the win.

Fatigue doesn’t seem to be in Gonzaga’s vocabulary as she tallied 24 points atop a triple-double performance.

This came after her double-double performance of 15 points for her other club team Cignal HD Spikers as they won against the Petron Blaze Spikers in five sets yesterday, forcing a winner-take-all match to decide who goes to the PSL finals.

This year has been a sweet comeback for the 5-foot-7 lefty who is slowly regaining her lethal form after sustaining an ACL injury back in 2017. After leading the Lady Troopers to a bronze medal finish in the previous Reinforced Conference, she is also one step closer in bringing the HD Spikers to the PSL finals for the very first time.

Despite the jampacked schedule due to playing for two different teams, Gonzaga said she has never felt the burden as she wants to give back to both teams.

“Lagi ko ngang sinasabi na gusto ko mag-give back sa coaches. Kasi siya [Kungfu Reyes], tinutulungan ako and binubugbog sa training—the same thing sa kabila,” Gonzaga said.

“Sobrang iniintindi nila ‘yung case ko. Eto na lang ‘yung way ko para makapagbalik ng tiwala,” she added.

With an exhausting game earlier and their do-or-die match tomorrow, some might think that Gonzaga has already reached her limit. However, her spirits are still up as she looks to make the most out of her comeback.

“Pagod na pagod, pero high morale ako kasi puro panalo—wala na akong iniisip na iba,” she ended.
