The 2019 Premier Volleyball League (PVL) Open Conference is almost drawing to a close, and the Creamline Cool Smashers still haven’t missed a beat in their bid to defend their crown.
The Cool Smashers maintained their position on top after sweeping the Pacifictown Army Lady Troopers earlier in straight sets, 25-15, 25-18, 25-22, to keep a perfect 14-0 record.
And yet open spiker Jema Galanza still sees bigger room for growth for the defending Open Conference champions, saying every game is an opportunity for them to improve and push their boundaries.
“Every game, doon namin makikita ‘yung improvement ng bawat isa at ng team. Dagdag morale sa amin lalo na kapag nananalo kami, and lesson siyempre kapag may mistakes,” Galanza said.
Against Pacifictown Army, Creamline took a strong start after getting an easy two-set.
In the third set, Pacifictown Army looked to extend the game as they led as much as six points after the second technical timeout.
However, the Cool Smashers inched back to take control of the set as they tied the game 18-all and went on a major point run to take the game.
Middle blocker Risa Sato led Creamline with 12 points, while Galanza and Rosemarie Vargas added 11 and 10 respectively.
With their definite hold on top of the team standings, Galanza said the reigning Open Conference champions need to keep their positive character consistent in order to show their usual dominant game.
“Huwag kaming sisimangot, huwag kaming tatahimik, and wag kaming sasabay sa bagal [ng kalaban]—kung gaano kami kabilis, dapat i-maintain lang namin kasi ganoon kami maglaro,” Galanza said.
Creamline looks to extend their winning streak to fifteen games as they face the Banko Perlas Spikers on Sunday.
With the semifinals on the horizon, the open spiker looks for better games with the Cool Smashers as they cannot afford complacency at this point, knowing the level of the other teams.
“Sabi nga ni Ate Ly, hindi natin alam kung ano ‘yung pwedeng ilaro sa Final Four, so dapat ready lang kami lagi,” Galanza ended.
