Iriga-Navy forge partnership, look to make a splash in PVL return

Returning teams Iriga City and Philippine Navy will make their comeback in the Premier Volleyball League (PVL) stage not as competitors but as new found allies.

The newly-minted Iriga-Navy squad is determined to overturn their respective dismal campaigns in the previous seasons of the Shakey’s V-League (SVL) – precursor to PVL.

The Lady Oragons – owned by the local government of Iriga in Camarines Sur – made their professional league debut in the 2016 SVL Open Conference where they finished seventh place.

As for the Philippine Navy, the last time they played in the SVL was during the 2015 season. They finished fifth and fourth in the Open and the Reinforced Conference, respectively.

Both teams had a short stint in a rival league since then.

They will be bannered by Bicolana power hitter Grazielle Bombita while adding the firepowers are former Adamson setter Janet Serafica, NCAA alums Norie Jane Diaz, Mary Jane Ticar, and Shyrra Cabriana.

Also in the roster are Hezzie Acuna, Devine Eguia, Carissa Martinez, Angela Kim, Macy Uber, former University of Baguio skipper Florence Madulid and University of Mindanao playmaker Renalyn Raterta.

The team will be mentored by long time Navy coach Edgardo Rusit. Iriga City Mayor Madelaine Alfelor-Gazmen who was in Iriga’s active roster in their maiden campaign will return as the team’s manager.

Iriga-Navy tapped a pair of American imports – Macy Ubben and Lauren Whyte- to boost their campaign.

They will open their season against the BaliPure Water Defenders on May 9 at 4:00pm.
