PayMaya scores first victory over romp of Tacloban

The PayMaya High Flyers made short work of the Tacloban Fighting Warays in straight sets, 25-8, 33-31, 25-20, to take their first victory in the opening day of the Premier Volleyball League Season 2 Reinforced Conference, Sunday afternoon at the Filoil Flying V Centre.

American import Tess Rountree starred in her first ever PVL game for PayMaya as she notched a team-high 22 points built on 20 attacks and two service aces.

Rountree made her presence felt early as she converted consecutive hits in a lopsided first set, 25-8. The High Flyers outplayed the Fighting Warays both in attacks, 13-3, and in aces, 5-1.

In a much closer second frame, the Tacloban Fighting Warays refused to fold early without putting up a good fight. PayMaya was already coursed to take the set, 24-22, but costly miscues from the HighFlyers helped Tacloban force a deuce.

A down-the-line hit from Aiko Urdas put PayMaya at set point, followed by a netball from Jovy Prado to seal the second set for the High Flyers, 33-31.

It was a close match early in the third set but the High Flyers relied on their reinforcements as they held on to their five point lead to close the game, 25-20, and take their first victory of the conference.

PayMaya’s other import Shelby Sullivan finished with 15 markers while Gretchel Soltones led the team’s locals with nine points.

Former NCAA Finals MVP Jovy Prado backstopped Tacloban with 12 points. Their Thai imports Amporn Hyapha and Fah Sangpan had a subpar debut, tallying 12 points combined.
