End or extend?
The University of Santo Tomas and the University of the Philippines will shoot for the outright Finals ticket when they take on separate foes in the second installation of the best-of-three semifinals of the Premiere Volleyball League (PVL) Collegiate Conference 2018 today.
The Golden Tigresses will try to solidify their entry to the Finals as they lock horns with Far Eastern University in the 2 p.m. action, while the Lady Maroons clash against Adamson University on 4 p.m. at the FilOil Flying V Arena in San Juan.
After a poor start, UST picked up the pace to outrun the Lady Tamaraws in four sets, 16-25, 26-24, 25-18, 25-23, in their first semifinals match-up.
The Kung Fu Reyes-led squad will rely heavily on the power duo of Milena Alessandrini and Eya Laure as they seek to halt the Katipunan based squad’s bid to end its eight-year title drought.
The high school standout Laure led the charge for the Tigresses with 19 markers built on 15 kills and four blocks.
Alessandrini added 12 kills, three blocks and an ace for 16 hits laced with 13 digs and eight excellent receptions.
Jerili Malabanan was FEU’s lone bright spot as she punched 10 markers on a losing effort.
Barely making it to the semifinals, the Lady Maroons handed the then unbeaten Adamson squad its first loss when they essayed a 24-26, 25-19, 25-22, 25-20 victory.
With Molde silent in terms of offense, Mariana Buitre took over the scoring role as she top scored for UP, who will try to book their first Finals appearance.
Buitre exploded for career-high 25 points off 23 kills and two blocks for the Diliman-based squad.
Top hitters Eli Soyud’s and Bern Flora’s combined 36 hits went for naught as the seven-game winning streak ended for the Lady Falcons.
