The PLDT Home Fibr Power Hitters showed better connection as they outlasted Cignal HD Spikers in cardiac five sets, 25-18, 25-19, 20-25, 20-25, 19-17, to take home the bronze medal of the Philippine Superliga (PSL) Grand Prix 2019 on Tuesday at the FilOil Flying V Center in San Juan.
The Power Hitters flirted with disaster as they allowed Cignal to stretch the match to a five-setter before they dug deep in their championship experience to bag the victory.
Swept during the preliminaries by the same squad, the Roger Gorayeb-mentored spikers came through when it mattered the most and finished the import-flavored conference with a bronze medal bonus.
The win also marked Gorayeb’s return to the podium since their bronze medal feat in the PSL All Filipino Conference 2014.
American outside hitter Kendra Dahlke played clutch as she powered PLDT with 27 huge markers off 24 kills, a couple of denials and an ace.
“It feels awesome especially it took our whole team to win the match and that’s exactly what we were kind of pushing for the whole season. Technically we had our ups and downs but we pulled it together,” said Dahlke, who has had a successful debut year playing overseas.
The HD Spikers, meanwhile, improved from their sixth place finish in last year’s iteration as they ended at no. 4 this year.
In total, PLDT registered nine wins and nine losses while Cignal had a win-loss 8-8 record.
