Coming off a straight-set demolition on PLDT Home Fibr, Petron showed no mercy when it crushed Generika Ayala in quick three sets, 25-18, 25-12, 25-16, on Tuesday in the Philippine Superliga (PSL) All Filipino Conference 2019.
The Blaze Spikers took the fight out of the Lifesavers to pick up their third straight victory whilst ending the latter’s four-game winning streak.
With the win, Petron’s card improved to 5-1 as Generika Ayala absorbed its second loss in six outings.
Ces Molina and Sisi Rondina scattered 12 hits apiece for the defending champs, who looked to close its first-round campaign on a strong note against Sta. Lucia on July 13.
For setter Rhea Dimaculangan, Petron’s recent good outings were result of their improving communication inside the court and their persistent drive to improve themselves.
“Siguro palagi lang kami nire-remind ni coach na mas mag-focus kami kung ano ang igagalaw namin kaysa mag-expect agad kami ng maganda. Trabaho pa rin kami and unti-unti namin mai-improve ‘yung communication,” said Dimaculangan, who dished out 18 excellent sets laced with two points.
Petron scorched hot from the get-go as veterans Molina, Reyes and Aiza Maizo-Pontillas led the offensive charge for the team.
Blaze Spikers head coach Shaq delos Santos fielded off-the-bench star Rondina in the third, managing to get the same result as Generika Ayala played sluggish volleyball all throughout the short affair.
Dimaculangan said that enjoying the game definitely helps the team in maintaining confidence throughout the encounter, which was evident in this match as everyone contributed for the win.
“Kailangan lang siguro namin magkaroon ng kumpyansansa sarili and ‘yung tulong-tulong. So lahat kami nag-adjust talaga,” she said.
Petron almost doubled up on Generika Ayala in terms of attacks, tallying 41 spikes as opposed to the latter’s 24.
The winning team also had a slight edge in blocks (8-5) and aces (5-3) while committing less errors (14-21).
Generika Ayala hopes to recover when it faces PLDT Home Fibr on July 11.
