Third time’s a charm for Cignal after five-set semis win over Petron

Third time’s a charm for Cignal as it eked out a cardiac 25-20, 10-25, 16-25, 27-25, 15-11, win Tuesday against Petron, forcing a do-or-die semifinals in the Philippine SuperLiga (PSL) All Filipino Conference 2019 at the Muntinlupa Sports Complex.

After suffering two heartbreaking five-set losses in the prelims, the HD Spikers were finally able to wield the upset axe against the Blaze Spikers to keep their Finals hope alive.

Cignal and Petron will square off anew on Thursday for the remaining finals ticket as F2 Logistics already secured the first one earlier.

Rachel Ann Daquis, Jovelyn Gonzaga and Alohi Robins-Hardy came up big for the HD Spikers, who showed grit and grind in the fourth before flexing their killer form in the rubber set.

Daquis paced her team with 21 hits built on 14 kills, five blocks, and two aces as Gonzaga managed 15 tallies on top of 23 digs.

Robins-Hardy dished out 26 excellent sets laced with eight points for Cignal, who had the edge in blocks, 14-8, despite Petron’s stellar performance in attacks, 58-71.

The ladies in red waxed hot early in the fifth off Janine Navarro’s points from the wings, zooming to a 12-8 blitz. Daquis then put on the finishing touches with two consecutive kills to hand the win to her squad.

Petron looked ready to advance to the next stage after dominating Cignal in the second and third frames followed by an inspired fourth set performance.

But the HD Spikers had other things in mind as they erased a 6-point deficit and showed composure down the stretch to extend the match.

Aiza Maizo-Pontillas and Sisi Rondina uncorked 22 and 20,respectively, on a losing effort as Petron wasted its twice-to-beat advantage.
