Coming into the match with a mission, Foton Tornadoes clobbered Sta. Lucia in four sets, 25-27, 25-15, 25-22, 25-11, Thursday to keep their semifinals hope alive in the 2019 Philippine SuperLiga (PSL) Invitationals Cup at the Malolos Sports and Convention Center.
With their semifinals stint on the line, the Blue Energy stayed sharp after their first set loss to dominate in the next three, exacting revenge on the Lady Realtors for their second victory in five outings.
The win kept Foton in hunt for a seat in the semis as they momentarily sit at no. 4 behind unbeaten Cignal (5-0) and Petron (4-0) and third placer F2 Logistics (3-1).
Sta. Lucia dropped at no. 5 on an identical 2-3 tally with the Cargo Movers as its final assignment.
Libero Jen Reyes said that this win is vital for the squad’s morale as they have had a rocky start this conference following the absence of the Santiago sisters.
Reyes, who amassed 23 excellent digs, is hoping that Foton will carry the momentum heading into its final preliminary assignment against Generika Ayala on October 13.
“Dito rin tataas ‘yung morale ng team kasi hindi naman nakakalimot si coach magpaalala sa amin, pati assistant, na must win talaga ‘yung game namin ngayon,” the National University alum said.
After a nip-and-tuck opening set which went the way of Sta. Lucia, Foton was relentless from that point forward with Eya Laure, Shaya Adorador and Mina Aganon leading the onslaught.
The Blue Energy was most dominant in the fourth frame, taking the set to a game-high 19-5 advantage off a 10-0 run to dictate the outcome of the match.
Laure paced the winning team with 19 markers built on 16 kills, a couple of aces and a block.
A close fight in blocks (6-7), Foton had 15 more attacks and three more aces as opposed to Sta. Lucia’s 41 and six, respectively.
But while they had the edge in the error department, 21-29, Reyes said that Foton has to focus on further lessening its errors.
“Siguro, sabi nga ng coaches namin, be mindful lang kasi nandoon na kami. Kumbaga ‘yung error lang talaga namin. ‘Yun ‘yung talagang kailangan namin alisin,” she closed.
