Missing three-out-of-five matches, Eya Laure makes up for lost time as she willed Foton Tornadoes to a scintillating, four-set decision over Sta. Lucia in the 2019 Philippine SuperLiga (PSL) Invitationals Cup earlier.
Laure uncorked team-high 19 hits built on 16 kills, a pair of aces and a block, powering the Blue Energy to a 25-27, 25-15, 25-22, 25-11 victory over the Lady Realtors in Pool D, Thursday at the Malolos Sports and Convention Center.
It was only the second time Laure saw action for the Aaron Velez-mentored squad following her debut game against Cignal where she managed eight points.
Recognizing her status as one of the newcomers to the team, Laure said that it’s important for her as the youngest in the roster to find enjoyment in playing with her new squad as most of the players are newcomers as well.
Not only will it lighten up the atmosphere off and on the court, but this will also further aid the team’s gelling as they march to the crucial stretch of the short tournament.
“Sa amim kasi sa training ine-enjoy lang namin ‘yung isa’t isa. ‘Yung gelling ng team siyempre nga karamihan sa amin is bago talaga sa team,” she said.
Tied with her academic duties, the University of Sto. Tomas ace hitter missed Foton’s four-set submission to Sta. Lucia, sweep victory against PLDT and three-set beating from F2 Logistics.
She returned just in time to help the Blue Energy keep its semifinals hope alive after improving its slate to a win-loss 2-3 to momentarily occupy no. 4.
But while she may have missed most of their preliminary assignments, Laure was quick to make her presence felt as she led Foton’s offensive charge all throughout the match.
The Blue Energy was in command most of the game except in the tightly-contested opening frame which ended in favor of Sta. Lucia.
For Laure, Foton lacked in enjoyment and communication on top of lousy block coverage during that set loss — all of which they managed to correct in the next three sets.
“Nagkulang lang siguro sa enjoyment and sa usap. ‘Yun ang nagkulang. And ‘yung depensa at coverage namin para sa isa’t isa,” she said.
Up next for Foton is a must-win game against Generika Ayala on October 13.
