Benchwarmers-turned-star hitters Aganon, Layug step up for Foton

With the absence of the famed Santiago sisters and with EJ Laure skipping the conference anew, the Foton Tornadoes Blue Energy’s chances of winning the Philippine Superliga (PSL) All Filipino Conference 2018 looked slim.

But that was before the tournament started.

The Tornadoes, who are now on a scintillating three-game winning streak, continue to prove that they are still a force to reckon with the emergence of their new heroes.

Two of the emerging superstars for Foton are Mina Aganon and Arianne Layug.

Benchwarmers during their collegiate careers, Aganon and Layug seemed to be getting the court time they deserve to showcase their wit and skills in volleyball.

The 25-year old Aganon spent most of her UAAP career with National University playing under the limelight of Myla Pablo, Kai Nepomuceno and Aiko Urdas.

In her final playing year, Aganon cracked into the Lady Bulldogs’ starting lineup in Season 76 before pursuing her professional volleyball career.

Layug, meanwhile, decided to cut her collegiate career short as she left De La Salle University this year to suit for Foton.

With the deepness of the Lady Spikers’ pool, it took the two-time UAAP champion Layug three years to seal a spot in the 14-woman lineup of La Salle for the top collegiate tourney.

Now, it seems, the perfect time to prove themselves has finally arrived to the former benchwarmers.

Aganon and Layug combined for 36 points as the Tornadoes defeated Sta. Lucia Lady Realtors in four sets, 25-14, 25-21, 19-25, 25-13, Thursday night at the FilOil Flying V Centre.

Aganon led all scorers with 19 markers while Layug added game-high 17 hits laced with 15 digs as the Tornadoes improved to a clean 3-0 card.

Their performance didn’t go unnoticed, of course.
