With ‘SiPons’ struggling, Molina stars for Petron amid criticism

Ces Molina was almost always under the fire every time Petron plays regardless if she played well or not.

The Blaze Spikers skipper was often criticized as she took one of the two starting outside hitter spots — which, for some fans, should’ve been for the high-leaping Sisi Rondina.

Many believe that the tandem of Bernadeth Pons and Rondina, who comes off the bench all throughout the tourney, is the better option for the defending champions.

For one, the “SiPons” duo was a proven and tested tandem as it has already brought two beach volleyball championships for the Blaze Spikers since pairing up last year.

While Pons — with her libero-like floor defense — mans the back court, Rondina and her nuclear attacks wreak havoc at front and vice versa.

It was their tandem who starred for Petron in Game One as Rondina replaced a struggling Molina during the crucial stretch of the first set and was never taken out of the starting unit since.

Rondina finished with game-high 12 markers while Pons added 10. Molina, meanwhile, scored none.

But during the Game Two yesterday, Molina redeemed herself and served as Petron’s steady fixture in racking up points and on-court leadership.

With the Pons and Rondina struggling to find consistency, Molina was Petron’s go-to girl on offense and defense.

Molina tallied scored 17 markers off 16 kills and a block for Petron while coach Shaq delos Santos shuffled between Pons and Rondina in the entirety of the match.

She also helped in defense, emerging as the Blaze Spikers’ second best digger as she amassed 19 excellent digs next to Buding Duremdes’ 33.

Pons and Rondina dropped 10 and nine hits, respectively.

In the end, Molina’s heroics for Petron went for naught as they surrendered in four sets while also losing their 13-game winning streak.

Nevertheless, Molina proved that while critics question her ability to lead her squad, she will let her game do the talking for her.

Molina and Petron look to end the conference with the gold medal when they take on F2 Logistics tomorrow at the FilOil Flying V Center in the Game Three of the Finals.
