Niemer, Bell overpower PLDT in Petron’s debut win

The return of American power hitters Katherine Bell and Stephanie Niemer to the Philippine SuperLiga (PSL) Grand Prix 2019 was nothing short of explosive.

Now on their second tour of duty in the country, Bell and Niemer announced their return in dominant fashion when they powered Petron to an impressive 25-19, 25-9, 25-10 victory against PLDT Home Fibr in their debut match earlier today at the FilOil Flying V Center in San Juan.

Making an early statement as the strongest import tandem this year, Bell and Niemer were quick to display their volleyball prowess that left fans in awe during their first stint here in 2018 and 2016, respectively.

With the opposing squad checking her out early in the first set, the 25-year old Bell didn’t hold back as she unloaded bombs after bombs on a PLDT team which has the great Tatan Pantone as libero.

After shaking off a slow start, the California-native outside spiker found her groove late into the opener and punished the Roger Gorayeb-mentored squad with 14 kills and a block for a game-high 15-point output.

Meanwhile, the 29-year old Niemer picked where she left off three years ago and displayed an all around performance whether on offense, defense and her patented bullet of a serve.

The spiker out of Kentucky, USA dropped 14 points built on nine kills, two blocks and three aces as the reigning champions kicked off their title defense winin style.

Their explosive performance, of course, didn’t go unnoticed as fans raved about them on social media.

But while Bell and Niemer did most of the damage, Petron’s local still contributed in the win as Mika Reyes, Remy Palma and Aiza Maizo-Pontillas chipped in eight, six and five, respectively.

Shaq delos Santos also had the luxury of fielding his second stringers with Petron on a double-digit cushion during the second and third frame.

PLDT, meanwhile, was clearly in shock of the Blaze Spikers’ fluid game as import Grace Lazard was the long player to crack into double digits, scoring 13 kills and a block for team-high 14 markers.

Petron faces Generika Ayala on Thursday at 7 p.m. while PLDT tries to bounce back at 2 p.m against Cignal HD.
