Niemer, Bell savor first victory in title retention bid

In their bid for a back-to-back Philippine Superliga Grand Prix crown, Petron’s American duo said their first game victory is the most important of all.

Both Stephanie Niemer and Kath Bell agreed that the first game tested their chemistry and their mettle going to a tougher road in their title retention for this conference.

For Bell, the first win sets the standard of their play as it is the beginning of their conference journey.

“[It is] so important. You know it’s the beginning of the journey and it’s the beginning of everyone getting together. It’s very important for us,” the 25-year-old American spiker said.

She added that while the team’s chemistry picked up in this game, she started a little bit shaky in the earlier parts of the game, and was reminded by her teammates to calm down and just play her game.

“Chemistry was great. It is really good. I was a little bit of jittery and I felt the whole support of the team. Stephanie and the team about calming down. We felt great and vibe is great,” Bell said.

Niemer, on the other hand, lauded the team for having the mental toughness in the first set as they struggled with their first ball.

“I think we started out a bit shaky but I think we picked up our communication and we just stayed strong as a team. We never counted ourselves out. We were down in the first, but we kept fighting. And I think that’s special for our team,” Niemer said.

She note, however, that receiving is crucial and should be improved in their next games.

“I think our passing can always improve. It can always be in system a little bit more. But I think it’s a great starting point for us. I’m pretty excited to see how far we can go,” the American said.

The deadly duo combined for 29 points for Petron and look to continue their winning ways as they face Generika Ayala on Thursday.
