It was a double celebration for Ateneo spiker Maddie Madayag.
Aside from the Lady Eagles’ win against UST, Madayag also celebrated her 18th birthday while playing a starting role for the defending champion on Sunday at the FilOil Flying V Arena in San Juan.
But for her, it was business as usual as she helped Ateneo clinched their 20th straight win dating back to 2014 in the UAAP women’s volleyball tournament.
“We could do better, we’re gonna train harder, and offer our best to God,” said the birthday girl, who scattered 7 points as the Lady Eagles survived the Golden Tigresses in 4 sets.
From being a reliever for the Loyola spikers, Madayag rose to the occasion as a starter after she scored 13 points in their opening win over NU.
“Sana walang ma-injure sa amin tapos sana ibigay namin yung best namin sa lahat ng games,” wished Madayag, who got a ‘birthday cheer’ from the Ateneo supporters every time she serves.
While celebrating, the Davao native is optimistic that Ateneo can still extend their winning streak.
“Hopefully, pero hindi naman natin talaga alam kasi yung ibang kalaban malalakas talaga,” she said. — By Jason Mercene
