The Adamson University Lady Falcons has a rich history in their UAAP women’s volleyball program.
They had two finals appearances, Season 68 and Season 70, when they were led by legendary coach Minerva Dulce Pante. In recent years, however, they struggled to get in to the final four due to player changes and system revamp with the arrival of head coach Airess Padda.
Adamson boasts some of its players that made an impact to the not only to the team but also to Philippine volleyball before some of them became legends in their own right.
Let’s take a look back to some of them:
ANGELA BENTING: OPEN SPIKER
Before Alyssa Valdez wowed the crowd with her blistering attacks and powerful kills, Angela Benting was doing that already for Adamson. In an intense match-up against the Rachel Ann Daquis-led FEU Lady Tamaraws, Benting almost single-handedly led the Falcons to a title – only to come up short. Nonetheless, her impact left a lasting impression to the Lady Falcons as a high scoring but humble open spiker that the fans loved. Her career high was 33 points against the UST Golden Tigresses. She also won the Best Receiver award in the defunct Shakey’s V-League.
KRISTINE ANN DAVE: OPEN SPIKER
Not all people know of this stalwart from the Season 68 runner up team but she was an extremely talented all around player. She was the Best Receiver in Season 66 and Best Spiker in Season 68, cementing her status as a reliable do-it-all player. Her high elevation catapulted her to one of the most efficient scorers from Season 66 up to 68, where she was the league’s top-scorer. It was also in Season 68 where she led the Lady Falcons to the Finals.
PAU SORIANO: MIDDLE BLOCKER
A former Best Spiker awardee in Season 72, Pau Soriano imposed a legitimate threat to her opponents in front of the net due to her size and length. Not only she can block from her opponents but she can also do the quick hitting to complement to her teammates at that time. She currently plays for the Creamline Cool Smashers of PVL.
LIZLEE ANN GATA-PANTONE: LIBERO
Tatan, the legendary libero of the Falcons who currently plays for the BaliPure Lady Water Defenders of PVL, is one of the best liberos ever stepped foot on the UAAP volleyball court. Her tenacity, determination, and aggressiveness on the ball made her a three-time Best Digger in Seasons 70, 71, and 72 – where she was also featured her as the Best Receiver. A former member of the Philippine women’s volleyball national team, the Bicolana sensation’s 77 excellent digs and 63 excellent receptions is still a record in the UAAP.
JANET SERAFICA: SETTER
Before Kim Fajardo and Jia Morado took the spotlight as Best Setters in the UAAP, there was Janet Serafica. She was the Best Setter in the Shakey’s V-League Season 5 championship team of Adamson. She also grabbed the same award in Season 70 of UAAP Women’s Volleyball tournament wherein the Lady Falcons made it all the way to the Finals before falling to the FEU Tamaraws.
RISSA JANE LAGUILLES: UTILITY
Sang Laguilles was one of the best servers in the UAAP during her time – plucking the Best Server award in Season 70. Though not as tall as the prototypical middle blocker, she held her own against Jacqueline Alarca of DLSU, Maica Morada of FEU, and Mary Jean Balse of UST. She was a vital cog in the Finals run for Adamson in Seasons 68 and 70. She also helped the Adamson-laden squad to a title in the Season 5 of the defunct Shakey’s V-League as the Finals MVP.
