Lady Maroons shock Lady Eagles in straight sets

The UP Lady Maroons threw the upset ax on Ateneo as they stunned the Lady Eagles in straight sets, 28-26, 25-23, 26-24, yesterday at the Mall of Asia Arena.

Here are the takeaways from the three-set stunner:

Lady Maroons:

– Total Dominance. The Lady Maroons dominated Lady Eagles in all departments as they registered 39 attacks, 11 blocks, and 8 aces against Ateneo’s 30-8-1.

– Newly-found Hero. Tots Carlos topscored for 22 points but it was Rem Cailing’s steady setting that made UP’s offense too much for Ateneo.

– Not Yet Done. With the victory, UP stayed alive in the competition, holding a 5-8 win loss record, to keep its final four bid alive.

Lady Eagles:

– K-at Your Service. Kat Tolentino served as the lone bright spot for Ateneo as she finished with 15 points from 13 attacks, an ace, and a block.

– No Finishing Kick. The Lady Eagles were leading by as much as five points in the second and third set at 21-16 but failed to win any as they found no answer to UP’s high octane offense.

– Crucial Loss. Ateneo remained as the second seed team with a 9-4 slate but a loss to La Salle and FEU’s sweep of their final two matches might cost the Lady Eagles the twice to beat advantage.
