No Alessandrini? No problem as Rondina, Laure power UST in rout of La Salle

Sweet sweep!

Sisi Rondina and Eya Laure proved too powerful as they led the University of Sto. Tomas in a scintillating three-set 25-20, 27-25, 25-17 victory against the defending champions De La Salle University in the UAAP Season 81, Wednesday at the FilOil Flying V Center in San Juan.

In the absence of injured Milena Alessandrini, who was bound to make
premature exit after sustaining a knee injury the last timeout, Rondina and Laure combined for 34 big points as the Golden Tigresses completed a straight-set stunner against the Lady Spikers.

Rondina delivered the goods with 17 kills and two blocks for 19 markers while Laure uncorked 15 hits off 13 spikes as the España squad scored its first win against La Salle since Season 78.

The defeat also marked the first time the Ramil de Jesus-mentored spikers went down twice a row in the eliminations since Season 70.

With the win, UST improved to a 3-2 record.

Rondina scorched hot right from the get-go to put UST on a huge 11-3 cushion in the pilot set. La Salle slowly cut a five-point deficit to two, 22-20 before Rondina came through with two kills as her squad made a 3-0 run to win the set.

The Golden Tigresses drew points from their wings anew in the second frame, with Rondina and Laure hitting across all cylinders. The Lady Spikers managed to lock the set at 19 all, but two costly errors down the final ticks sealed the deal for the former.

The third set was no different, with UST taking charge midway for a 21-13 blitz and never looking back.

Aduke Ogunsanya, Julia Ipac, and Jolina dela Cruz scored eight points apiece for La Salle, who absorbed their second straight loss in five outings.

UST dominated in offense as they registered 41 attacks, more than half of which came from Rondina and Laure, while the losing squad only managed 28.

Though the block and service department were a close match, 7-6 and 6-5, respectively, the winning team had five fewer errors compared to La Salle’s 23.
