UP reasserts mastery against error-hit La Salle

Sweet sweep!

Amid the ballyhoo, the University of the Philippines made quick work of the De La Salle University for an easy 25-16, 26-24, 25-19 victory to complete an elimination round sweep of the reigning champs in the UAAP Season 81, Sunday at the Ynares Sports Arena in Antipolo.

Following their cardiac five-set encounter in the first round, the Lady Maroons repeated their mastery over the Lady Spikers as they pummeled them in straight sets to kick off their second-round bid on a strong note.

UP is now on a four-way tie with DLSU, University of Sto. Tomas and Far Eastern University at the second spot of the standings with a 5-3 card.

It was, meanwhile, La Salle’s first head-to-head loss since getting swept by Ateneo in Season 79.

Tots Carlos led the onslaught as she dropped 13 hits all from kills while Isa Molde chipped in 11 makers built on eight kills, a pair of aces and a block for the Diliman-based squad.

The game quickly went UP’s way as the spikers from Taft just couldn’t get their offensive groove going after being plagued by errors.

UP took advantage of an error-plagued DLSU in the first two frames. The Lady Maroons went for a game-high nine-point lead at 22-13 in the opener before crawling back from a 12-17 hole in the second as the Lady Spikers were overwhelmed by their own errors.

With their backs against the wall, La Salle zoomed for a 6-3 blitz in the third, but UP closed the gap for a one-point third set battle. Tied at 17, Carlos came through as she powered a 4-0 run for the Lady Maroons to seal the win for her squad.

Des Cheng was the lone bright spot for DLSU as she tallied eight kills, two aces and a block for an 11-point output.

UP had a slim advantage across all scoring areas with 28 kills, eight blocks and five aces compared to the losing team’s 26, five and three, respectively. But it was the uncharacteristic 37 errors that doomed La Salle as UP managed to minimize their errors at 23.

UP hopes to avenge their first-round loss against Ateneo in their match-up on March 30 while DLSU looks to bounce back against National University on Wednesday.
