Heather Guino-o on FEU win over Ateneo: “Hindi pa kami tapos”

With their backs against the wall, Heather Guino-o only had one thing in mind: not today.

The graduating player lifted the Far Eastern University (FEU) Lady Tamaraws anew as they survived the Ateneo de Manila University Lady Eagles in five classic sets, 10-25, 25-23, 25-22, 12-25, 15-8, earlier in the UAAP Season 81 women’s volleyball tournament at the Mall of Asia Arena.

Playing their eighth extended match in the tournament, the Lady Tamaraws made sure they wouldn’t repeat their first-round loss against the Lady Eagles, showing character in the final set as they pulled away late-game to take the victory.

With the win, FEU successfully erases Ateneo’s twice-to-beat advantage and forces a do-or-die game to decide who goes to the championship round.

While Guino-o headlined her team’s win anew with 17 points, she praised her team for displaying a balanced scoring effort against the league-leading team.

“Wala naman sa amin kung sino ‘yung may mataas na score–ang titignan mo, kung paano nagtulungan ‘yung team at kung paano namin hindi pinabayaan ang isa’t isa,” Guino-o said.

The graduating open spiker felt proud of her team’s performance today, successfully extending their season and proving that they refuse to go down without a fight.

“Sobrang saya sa pakiramdam kasi dito namin malalaman kung last na ba namin ‘to o magtutuloy-tuloy pa kami, pero pinatunayan namin na hindi pa kami tapos,” Guino-o said.

She, together with fellow graduating teammates Jerrili Malabanan and Kyle Negrito, admitted feeling sentimental with the realization that they are down to their last games with the Lady Tamaraws.

Before today’s game, the seniors all made a promise: to fight their hearts out for the glory of FEU.

“Iniisip na namin sa mga nakaraan naming training na, papayag ba kaming last na laro na namin ‘to? Kung hahahayaan lang naming magpatalo kami, parang sumuko na kami agad, kaya tinatak namin sa isip namin na hindi pwedeng wala na,” Guino-o said.

The Lady Tamaraws proved to have a difficult game against the Lady Eagles as they barely won the second and third sets and dropped two lopsided sets, specifically losing the fourth set due to reception problems.

Guino-o attributed their meltdown to the intense atmosphere in the arena, and said the Morayta squad needs to toughen up and maintain unfazed especially in a pressure-packed game.

“Kitang-kita naman po namin na ‘yung crowd, sobrang sumisigaw for Ateneo–naging isa na rin sila sa kalaban namin. Pati sa reception, nahirapan kami,” Guino-o said.

With their do-or-die game on Wednesday, the senior hopes to see the Morayta faithful cheer for them as always as they do their best to bring FEU back to the finals once again.

“Alam ko pong hindi nila kami pababayaan na lumaban nang kami lang, alam naming all-out sila para sumuporta sa amin,” Guino-o ended.
