Lady Tamaraws to prepare twice as hard in their do-or-die game, says Coach George Pascua

Even with odds stacked against them, the Lady Tamaraws seized the perfect opportunity to show what they’re made of.

The Far Eastern University (FEU) Lady Tamaraws got to live another day as they pounced on the Ateneo de Manila University Lady Eagles in five sets, 10-25, 25-23, 25-22, 12-25, 15-8, earlier in the UAAP Season 81 women’s volleyball semifinals at the Mall of Asia Arena.

Playing their eighth extended game of the season, the Lady Tamaraws showed character in the fifth as they recovered from their lopsided fourth set loss and pulling away late-game, establishing a 7-1 run from their 8-7 lead to take the game.

Head coach George Pascua, who led FEU back to the finals last season, praised his team for surviving yet another five-set game, saying he doesn’t mind as long as they win.

“During training namin, pina-practice namin ‘yung fifth set just in case dumating ‘yung ganong scenario. Hindi naman kami nagwo-worry kung matalo man kami nang una–ang importante, kung paano mo tatapusin sa dulo,” Pascua said.

With their victory, the Lady Tamaraws successfully neutralized Ateneo’s twice-to-beat advantage and now has the chance to go back to the championship round anew.

After the Lady Eagles took the fourth set and extended the game to a decider, Pascua reminded his players what they are capable of and told them to take the opportunity.

“Tinanong ko lang sila kung gusto nilang manalo. Basta ang importante, maglalaro sila base sa gusto nila at walang bibitaw, kasi eto na e,” Pascua said.

“Every game is an opportunity for us to step forward, kaya sabi ko sa kanila, i-claim na natin. Hindi pa naman natatapos e, basta nandoon ang eagerness para manalo,” the head coach added.

His players surely responded as they displayed a balanced scoring effort, with senior Heather Guino-o stepping up once again with 17 points to lead her team.

Going to their do-or-die game on Wednesday, Pascua said his team will work twice as hard and fix their lapses today, especially on their communication, in order to inch one step closer to their title dreams.

“Iyong mga struggle na dumating sa amin kanina, ‘yun ‘yung mga bagay na dapat naming i-fix sa upcoming game namin. Pagtatrabahuhan namin ‘yon, times two, kasi mahirap na matalo dahil sa ganong situation,” Pascua said.

“Regroup lang, kasi hindi pwedeng mawawala tayo sa game plan natin at magkaroon ng struggle. Ang importante, nandoon ‘yung communication nila to avoid unforced errors,” the head coach ended.
