Eya Laure draws inspiration from UST faithful in Game One sweep over Ateneo

With a community dedicated to supporting them every step of the way, there’s no way the Tigresses would lose.

Eya Laure had this in mind as the University of Santo Tomas (UST) Golden Tigresses prevailed over the Ateneo de Manila University Lady Eagles in a straight-set victory, 25-17, 25-16, 25-20, earlier in Game One of the UAAP Season 81 women’s volleyball championship round at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.

The España squad proved to be all business as they dominated from the get-go, taking advantage of Ateneo’s reception woes and scoring mercilessly from the offensive end to draw first blood in the best-of-three title series.

The golden rookie came up with steady contributions anew from UST, registering 11 points to assist graduating skipper Sisi Rondina’s 23-point effort.

After their masterful victory over the league-leading Lady Eagles, Laure credited not only her teammates but also the UST faithful for their unwavering support, expressing how much she wants to repay their community’s support with nothing but a championship.

“Actually kanina, tinititigan ko silang lahat habang naggo-“Go USTe”. Hanggang ngayon, hindi ako makapaniwala na nabalik namin silang lahat, ‘yung tiwala nila bumalik din, [at] ‘yung suporta nandoon,” Laure said.

“Sobrang naa-amaze din ako na every game, na hanggang ngayon, nandiyan sila, ups and downs. Sobrang nakakataba ng puso,” she added.

Laure has had a wonderful season in her first playing year with the Tigresses, as she is recently named as the Rookie of the Year and the first Best Outside Hitter.

Serving as UST’s dynamic duo together with Rondina, Laure helped bring the team back to the championship round, a feat they last achieved back in Season 73.

As they are one game away from the long-awaited title they last won back in Season 72, Laure said the Tigresses need to trust their program and keep a winning mindset going into Game Two on Wednesday.

“Sabi ko kila Ate Sisi nung nanalo kami and naghuddle kami sa gitna, walang magiging kampante. May isang laro pa [at] hindi pa tapos ang laban–sa Wednesday, kahit ano pwedeng mangyari,” Laure said.

“Tamang mindset lang, and alam ko naman ‘yung program ni Coach Kungfu–sobrang naniniwala ako sa kanya and ‘yung training na binibigay niya sa amin kasi iyon ‘yung nagmo-mold sa amin as a player,” she ended.
