Inspired by the Jesuit value of magis, the UAAP officially kicked off its 82nd season at the Mall of Asia Arena with the vision of doing more and going beyond expectations.
Jett Villarin, president of host school Ateneo de Manila University, called for solidarity amid diversity between the eight schools.
“We are many colors here, but we are first a community before we are competitors,” Villarin said.
Magis, associated with the Jesuit motto ad majorem dei gloriam or “for the greater glory of God”, is a Latin word which means ‘more’ or ‘greater’.
In the opening ceremonies, the UAAP took a trip back to the glory days and featured respective feats in the league, followed by the parade of players from member universities.
Unlike past seasons, no basketball games were held today as the league wanted to highlight student-athletes from all varsity teams.
Advocating for a bigger cause, UAAP will also give out medals and trophies made of recyclable materials and created by communities from Taal and Marawi.
The players also participated in the Oath of Sportsmanship led by Ateneo’s Maxine Esteban and other student-athletes who will represent the country at the upcoming 2019 Southeast Asian Games.
Participating universities include host school Ateneo, Adamson University, De La Salle University, Far Eastern University, National University, University of the East, University of the Philippines, and University of Santo Tomas.
First semester events include basketball, juniors volleyball, beach volleyball, badminton, taekwondo, table tennis, cheerdance, and swimming.
