Dimdim Pacres on return to starting lineup: ‘It’s good to be back’

With the absence of open spiker Milena Alessandrini due to a partial ACL injury, it is imperative that someone from the España squad rises up to the occasion.

What could have been a disaster for the University of Santo Tomas (UST) Golden Tigresses after losing one of their most reliable scorers became an unexpected opportunity for Dimdim Pacres to pounce on as she helped her team pull off one of the most stunning victories this season.

The Golden Tigresses bounced back in the best way possible as they dominated the defending champions De La Salle University (DLSU) Lady Spikers in straight sets, 25-20, 25-22, 25-17, yesterday at the Filoil Flying V Center.

For the first time this season, Pacres started as the opposite hitter for UST as she chipped in eight points, helping the senior-rookie duo of Sisi Rondina and Eya Laure who contributed 19 and 15 respectively.

She wasted no time taking advantage of the opportunity given to her as she immediately made her presence felt, delivering thunderous spikes and displaying solid floor defense.

For the 5-foot-9 lefty, her return to the starting lineup was a chance for redemption after her bad performance last season.

“Sabi ni coach sa akin, it’s time to redeem myself,” Pacres said. “It’s good to be back kasi last season, sobrang pangit ng pinakita ko, so ngayon eto na ‘yung magandang chance para sa akin at para sa team.”

Head coach Kungfu Reyes commended Pacres for stepping up for the Golden Tigresses, reminding her to keep her emotions in check in order to maximize her outputs in the succeeding games.

“Ang nire-remind ko sa kanya, at para na din sa lahat, hindi kami pumunta lang dito para mag-entertain ng crowd at kung sinuman-nandito kami to compete. Itama mo muna ‘yung ginagawa mo bago ka mag-enjoy,” Reyes said.

The head coach also told his player to shrug off the scoring pressure prompted by Alessandrini’s absence, reminding Pacres of her capacity to do wonders for UST.

“You perform well outside UAAP pero pagdating sa main league natin, bigla kang nawawala–is it because of pressure? Alam naman namin ‘yung kapasidad niya,” the head coach said. “This time, kailangan namin siya–kung hindi ka man pupuntos, wag kang magtapon ng bola. Pero imposibleng hindi siya pupuntos.”

With Pacres seeing more playing time as she is poised to help Rondina and Laure wreak havoc for the España squad, only one thing is on her mind amid expectations:

“Ready ako. Ready naman ako lagi.”
