Dela Cruz shines as DLSU boosts semis bid after sweep of Adamson

Rookie Jolina dela Cruz starred as De La Salle University disposed of Adamson University for a commanding straight-set victory, 25-15, 25-18, 25-16, in the second round of the UAAP Season 81 Women’s Volleyball Tournament.

Dela Cruz dropped nine kills, two blocks and two aces for game-high 13 points to lead the Lady Spikers to their third consecutive victory after an elimination round sweep of the Lady Falcons.

“Siguro po ‘yung motivation ko sa training pa lang. Sinasabi ni coach Ramil lagi nga na parang magtiwala ka lang sa sarili mo. Nilagay kita sa p’westo na ‘yan kasi parang may misyon ka. Iniisip ko lagi na kailangan kong i-help ang mga ate to get ‘yung mga panalo namin,” said dela Cruz, who also added 10 digs.

“Hindi kami nagpakumpyansa agad. Ginawa pa rin namin ang lahat. Iniisip naming ‘yung second set na ‘yun, first set pa rin. ‘Yung third set na ‘yun, first set pa rin para makuha pa naming lahat,” she said.

With the win, the Ramil de Jesus-backed squad strengthened their hopes of a Final Four return as they improved to a 8-3 record.

DLSU waxed hot right away in the opener as they go for a commanding 16-5 lead off their solid defense to take the set.

Adamson showed more fight in the second as they shrugged off a 0-6 start for a slim 16-15 advantage. The Lady Spikers stepped on the gas for a 7-point run to retake the lead and grab the set off an ace from dela Cruz.

The green-and-white spikers wasted no time dismantling Adamson in they buried their opponents in a 21-15 hole and never looked back.

Trisha Genesis and Bern Flora scored seven hits apiece for Adamson, who was already out of semifinals contention with their 1-10 slate.

Up next for DLSU is their much-anticipated rematch against bitter rival Ateneo while Adamson looks to end their skid against UE on April 13.
